The New Horizons in Biology and Medical Research lectures are offered online to ensure teaching and higher education continuity during the Covid-19 crisis. Professor of Virology and oncologist Maria Grazia Masucci of the Karolinska Institutet Stockholm will give her online lecture on Thursday, April 16 at 6.00 pm discussing her research on how tumor-causing viruses stimulate cell growth and how the host immune system reacts to the infected cells.

“This online lecture, being hosted by Pisa and Stockholm institutions, is our rapid response to the Covid-19 and to researchers and students who are granted educational continuity through leveraging online technology assets. The upcoming lecture by Maria Grazia Masucci will serve our educational purposes at different levels of training. Professor Masucci is a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Assembly which awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.  As a Professor of Virology, she is currently focusing on distribution of SARS-CoV-2 and similarity in the pathogenic mechanism of CoVs and Epstein Barr virus. The COVID-19 infection has changed our world and we do not have solutions about immunity or resistance to SARS-CoV-2 apart from ICU admission” said Professor Vincenzo Lionetti as the coordinator of the New Horizons in Biology and Medical Research seminar series.

“Professor Masucci – added Vincenzo Lionetti – gladly accepted our invitation to give an online talk. We are suspending access to Sant’Anna School campus until further notice, but we are working to better prepare our students. When the crisis ends, we will be delighted to invite Professor Masucci to meet students and researchers for sharing research findings, thoughts and ideas.”
